Day 219-Down the Coast from Vilanculos to Tofo

Vilanculos-Maxixe-Inhambane-Tofo

We were meant to stay at Baobob Backpackers for 2 nights with intentions of checking out the islands in the Bazaruto Archipelago. However, the weather hasn’t been great in Vilanculos, so we decide to keep heading south to Tofo.
From here, we walked into town and hopped on a chapa that was heading to Maxixe. It took about 3.5 hours to drive 250km and costs 230 mets plus another 20 mets each for our backpacks.

In Maxixe, you’ll need to catch the ferry to Inhambane. The ferry terminal is about a 5 min walk away and will cost 10 mets, plus another 10 mets for a backpack. Once in Inhambane, walk 10 mins to the bus station to take a chapa to Tofo. This is where they will really try and take advantage of you as a foreigner. It costs locals 12 mets to get to Tofo. They wanted to charge us 100 mets each, including our bags. After arguing, we ended up paying 40 mets each.

Turtle Cove Lodge was about a 15 minute walk away and quite hard to find. Once we got there, we were stoked! It had been a while since we had a proper sleep and a hot shower. The lounge and bar area is extremely cozy. It’s exactly what we needed!
