Wow! The landscape from South Africa to Namibia is stunning! It’s a rare occasion for me to stay up during bus rides, but it was so beautiful I could not let myself fall asleep.
As budget travelers, we decided to travel overland on an Intercape coach bus from Cape Town to Windhoek. We booked it online and it only set us back R690 each. The reclining seats were relatively comfy and the bus was only half full, which meant we got our own seats. The bus made quite a few stops as we were leaving Cape Town, but once we were on the road, we only stopped every so often for a break. If you email Intercape, they will actually send you a detailed schedule that includes all the stops.
Overall, it was smooth ride. We encountered a 2 hour delay due to an issue with the water pipe, but what’s another 2 hours on a 20 hour journey? Nevertheless, we made it to the border at 10pm, 2 hours before my South African tourist visa expired! Keep in mind, delays can happen anywhere and we are in Africa so take that into consideration when making travel arrangements. Word of advice, try not to travel on the day your visa expires!
From that point on, it was smooth sailing all the way to Windhoek, Namibia.
