Day 169-A Glimpse of History at Mandela’s House

[Inside Mandela’s House]

Walking through 8115 Vilakazi Street is like taking a stroll through history. Home to Nelson Mandela from 1946 to 1962, the building has been well-preserved and now known as the Nelson Mandela National Museum. Although the original building is still in tact with the original bullet holes and everything, the humble abode was filled with so much memorabilia, documents, and certificates that it felt almost like a tourist trap. The entire Vilakazi Street was a little too much of a tourist attraction, with vendors and all. I guess it is to be expected, though I thought the experience would be a bit more educational.  We ended our afternoon with at a traditional restaurant with a buffet lunch and live music. Nonetheless, it was worth experiencing!

“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” -Nelson Mandela
