Good things don’t always come to those who wait. Good things come to those who throw themselves out there, aren’t afraid of rejection, and don’t take no for an answer. If you want something, ask for it. Whether it’s with your work or meeting new people, create your own opportunities.
This morning, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to take over Girl Gone International’s Instagram account for a week! Girl Gone International is a digital magazine that is focused on empowering the new generation of female expats and travellers. Coincidentally, I had been wanting to attend a Girl Gone International meetup in Cape Town for quite some time now and happened to get off the waitlist. Meant to be? I think so!
I wanted to attend this meetup for an evening of drinks and socializing because I have been finding it difficult to meet others like me in Cape Town. Apparently, I am not the only one who feels this way. The girls that I met are all wonderful ladies who are now living and working here, and they find themselves in the same situation. Even local’s have informed me that it can get quite cliquey in the city. For me, it’s been different because I am not a local, nor a traveller. I am in this transient state of just being. I don’t meet many other travellers because I am not staying in hostels or going on sightseeing tours. I’m spending a lot of my time working online at coffee shops when most Capetonians are at work.
Now this isn’t to say I haven’t made friends here! Rather than meeting a ton of travellers who you will probably never see again, I have the opportunity to spend quality time with a handful of individuals and develop lasting friendships. It’s just been a bit of an adjustment staying in one place, knowing you will leave soon, but still feel like you are living like a local. Oh, the life of a girl gone international!
Side note.. Meetup.com is an amazing platform to meet up with others in your community. It’s a useful tool whether you are looking to socialize, learn a new skill, or engage in group activities!
