Passion. A strong desire, powerful emotion, or compelling enthusiasm towards something.
The topic of passion comes up quite often, whether you are speaking with your boss, entrepreneurs, artists, travellers, or the guy sitting next to you on the bus. There is an impressive amount of resources available on this subject, such as podcasts, TedTalks, conferences, and inspirational speakers. Why is passion such an important topic of discussion? Are you passionate about your work and how you live your life? Do you find drive, motivation, and inspiration in everything that you do? If not, then why do you do it? For the money or the title? The preconceived notion that it’s normal to work a job you hate in order to live a “fulfilling” life with a big house, nice car, and a retirement fund, is a big fat lie. It is a misconception instilled in us by teachers, parents, and a large percentage of society. This will most likely NOT lead you to a passionate and fulfilling life, but quite the opposite.
All it takes is a little self-reflection, courage to step outside your comfort zone, and determination to make it happen. This applies to everything in life. I love engaging in conversation with those who speak out of passion. It’s quite obvious when their entire face lights up, eyes wide open, as they speak with excitement and enthusiasm. Life is too short to do things that don’t bring happiness into our lives. It’s human behavior to be driven by what makes us enthusiastic and joyful. These simple behaviors not only further success, but help create an all-round happy life.
There will always be people who doubt you, put you down, or critique your ideas. Let them! This will allow you to reflect and by moving forward, it shows commitment to you and what you do. With any leader, idealist, or non-conformist, comes a following of skeptics.
This isn’t about luck or winning the lottery. It’s about figuring out what you love and what makes you come alive! It’s about taking initiative over your life, taking the horse by the reins, and doing everything with passion. Whether it’s with work, your hobbies, or simply the way you live your life, do it for yourself. It’s about letting go of all that you’ve been taught, expectations of others, expectations of yourself, and what people may think. Make time and space for what gives you fulfillment and let go of what isn’t serving purpose in your life. The world doesn’t need another generation of conformists, but instead people who live with passion. The world needs people who come alive, those who inspire others, who live happy lives, and contribute to the greater good.
We only have so much time and energy in a day, days in a year, and years in a lifetime. It’s time to start living!
