Day 130-PechaKucha Cape Town Vol.33

Cape Town

[PechaKucha Cape Town Vol.33]

The best way to get acquainted in a new city is to get involved and do the things you would normally do. So that is exactly what I did when I attended PechaKucha here in Cape Town.

On the first Tuesday of every other month, over 100 people gather in Cape Town ready to be inspired!

PechaKucha Night originated in Tokyo as an informal and fun gathering for creative individuals to share ideas based on a 20 x 20 presentation format. The idea is quite simple. The speaker presents 20 images, each for 20 seconds, while talking through their slides. Artists, entrepreneurs, designers, changemakers, motivators, or anyone with a cool story can participate as a speaker!

Here are a few that left me intrigued:

Conn Bertish, Cancer Dojo (cancerdojo.org | @cancerdojo)

A digital platform where cancer patients are empowered to actively grow, learn, and share skills throughout their battle. With a mission to increase the survival rate of cancer one playful mind at a time, Cancer Dojo was created by Conn Bertish, a cancer surivor who discovered his path of psychoneuroimmunology through visual interpretation and creative self-healing.

“I was augmenting my treatments with my mind” -Conn Bertish

Mattias Axell, Kaospilot (kpcpt.org | @kpcpt)

Based in Denmark, Kaospilot is a business and design school with an emphasis on entrepreneurship, leadership, social change, personal growth, and creativity. To further innovative learning, students spend a semester abroad in Cape Town where they use acquired skills and knowledge to collaborate with local organizations.

“Be curious at all times. Ask questions. Don’t stop learning and changing” -Mattias Axell

Sham Wilson, Project Ignition (projectignition.co.za | @proj_ignition)

A non-profit organization and innovative program that encourages young participants to be extraordinary, while developing skills in leadership, money management, and social responsibility. They strive to spark innovation, unleash potential, and empower the youth to be leaders and entrepreneurs in their community.

“If it affects you, it is your problem” -Sham Wilson

You always leave these events feeling inspired, motivated, and ready to make a change. Apart from the great vibe, PechaKucha presents an opportunity to find out what is happening in your community and to connect with the individuals who stand behind these incredible ideas. It was also very interesting for me to compare the difference in speakers based on the city. A lot more changemakers here, which is great for Cape Town!
