Happy Freedom Day!

Freedom Day commemorates the first democratic post-apartheid election that was held in 1994. The liberation of South Africa is now celebrated every year on April 27th.

Since today was a national public holiday, we spent the day at Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront. The V&A is a huge hub for tourists as it’s filled with exquisite restaurants, a shopping center, a food market, souvenir shops, hotels, a Ferris wheel, and a beautiful view. It’s a great place to take a stroll on a warm, sunny day.

What I love most about the V&A (aside from the yummy food market) are the performances all along the boardwalk. There are always performers singing and dancing, even kids! In celebration of Freedom Day, tons of bystanders surrounded the main stage to enjoy the show, which was quite spectacular!

“We dedicate this day to all the heroes and heroines in this country and the rest of the world who sacrificed in many ways and surrendered their lives so that we could be free.” -Nelson Mandela
