Day 117-Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi-Johannesburg-Cape Town

Honestly, it can get quite tiring when you’re constantly traveling. We see all the glamorous photos on social media, but along with the good comes the bad and the ugly. There are times when you don’t have access to a proper shower and are without clean clothes. You often find yourself in a situation where you’re constantly delayed in transit, miss connections, squished like sardines on a train for hours, or you’re stuck on a local bus without air conditioning in a humid city. Don’t forget about the nights where you end up sleeping on the floor of an airport, sometimes with other travelers (if you’re lucky). The worst is when you touch your skin and you’re left with a mixed residue of sweat and dirt on your fingers. Disgusting, I know. Don’t get me wrong, by no means am I complaining! It’s all part of the journey and I absolutely love every bit of it!

However, traveling can also get hectic from time to time! The key is to stay calm, adapt, and problem solve! Since my transit began, I’ve paid off a local bus driver to get me to the airport on time so I don’t miss my first flight. I’ve waited in the airport for hours due to fog, which delayed my second flight by 3 hours. This caused me to miss my third flight after running through customs and the terminal like a maniac. In the end, I managed to purchase a new ticket on the last flight out to Cape Town just minutes before the gate closed! At the same time, I was trying to get on Skype to call my bank because my credit card wasn’t going through. I’ve never missed a flight, but there is a first for everything!

After 30 hours of travel and a few mishaps, I’ve finally made it to Cape Town in one piece! It feels surreal to be in Africa after 4 months in Asia! It’s been an unreal adventure with many life lessons. Strangers have become good friends, a couple close calls with robbery, some of the most beautiful sunsets, accidents that could have been worse, memories that I won’t ever forget, nights I can’t remember, and a close to perfect ending to another chapter. Can’t wait for what’s coming up next!

“All endings are also beginnings. We just don’t know it at the time” -Mitch Albom
